Description

Brahms and Dvořák struck a remarkable friendship almost by accident, after Brahms reluctantly accepted to join the jury of the Austrian State Stipendium, set up to provide financial support to talented composers within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Dvořák, who was practically unknown outside of his native Bohemia, submitted 15 works, and Brahms was so moved that he became his friend
and mentor, and proved instrumental in ensuring that the world paid notice to the Czech composer.

The two composers admired and influenced each other, and when Dvořák composed his Cello Concerto, Brahms exclaimed that he would have tried writing one himself – the closest he ever got to doing so was his Double Concerto – had he known that it was possible to create such a great work.

Brahms took 21 years to write his First Symphony, but a few months after the premiere, he penned his Second Symphony in a few weeks. The first was sombre in nature, and the second was expected to follow suit – Brahms even wrote to his publisher that he had “never written anything so sad – but it is a cheerful work with a triumphant ending.

The concert also features a performance of György Ligeti’s Ramifications, a work for strings which divides a string orchestra in two group. The instruments of one of these groups are tuned a quarter tone higher, creating a remarkable dissonant effect.

Programme

György Ligeti – Ramifications

Antonín Dvořák – Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104

Johannes Brahms – Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73
