Luis Aguilar – Tenor

Luis Aguilar hails from Torreon, Mexico. He was part of the National Opera Studio in London for the season 2019-2020. Described in ForumOpera France: “Luis Aguilar has overwhelmed the audience by the intensity and sensitivity of his singing, as well as his unfailing musicality”. Mexico’s leading opera magazine ProOpera, described him as a “rising and refined tenor with great musicality”. Recent performances include a recital along Mezzosoprano Marvic Monreal at the Teatru Manoel during the Valletta International Baroque Festival; a NOS residency at Welsh National Opera where Luis performed excerpts of Ullman’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, as well he recently sang the role of Lensky in a new production of Eugene Onegin directed by Paul Curran at the Shubert Theater in New Haven. Aguilar sang the role of Tamino at Yale’s Opera production of Die Zauberflöte in 2018; in 2016 he made his debut as Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Opera de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico.

In concert Aguilar has sung the title role of Bernstein’s Candide with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, Messiah’s tenor solo with the Hartford Symphony and the Waterbury Symphony as well as the solos of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bach’s Magnificat and Mozart’s Requiem.

Luis Aguilar is a recipient of the Yale School of Music Alumni Association Prize for “students who have excelled in their respective fields and have made important contributions to the school of Music”. Luis Aguilar was also the winner of the 4th place and Jose Mojica prize in Opera de San Miguel Competition 2018 as well as a finalist in The Giulio Gari Foundation competition in 2017.

Mr. Aguilar holds a Master of Musical Arts and a Master of Music from Yale University and a Bachelor in Music from The Hartt School, and he is an alumn of the Georg Solti Accademia.
Charles Buttigieg – Baritone
Charles Buttigieg is a 20 year old Baritone from Gozo. He started singing at a very early age and joined the Chorus Urbanus under the direction of Mro John Galea in 2011. He has been studying Voice since then with Juliette Bisazza. Charles has already sung as a soloist in various concerts and several times for the President of Malta. He was also invited by Joseph Calleja to sing at his Christmas concert for the Patrons of the “BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation” and he was also invited to sing with Joseph Calleja at Teatru Manoel. He was awarded a scholarship to continue his vocal studies and education. He also sang in the “Jubilee of Mercy Concert” in Aid of the Archbishop’s Seminary. In December 2016 Charles was invited by Mrs.Michelle Muscat, the Prime Minister’s wife to sing in the Concert “Christmas Classics Under The Stars” with the Malta Youth Orchestra under the direction of Mro. Riccardo Bianchi. In June 2017, Charles attended the Mediterranean Opera Studio & Festival in Caltagirone where he was chosen by Jack Li Vigni to perform La bohème inTeatro Eschillo, Gela and in Agrigento. With the support of the BOV JC Foundation, in 2018, Charles has frequented a Master-Class in Nevada with Dolora Zajick. Later that year he went to Philadelphia, where he has been chosen by one of the most selective schools in the U.S.A. The Curtis Institute of Music where he is continuing his studies. Here he was awarded a one year scholarship to further his studies in repertoire, history of music, theory and piano studies and voice with Patricia McCaffrey.

He is currently also studying voice under the leadership of Mro Jack LiVigni. Recently he was invited at a private fundraising concert in New York City, in the presence of the Chairman of the Metropolitan Ms. Ann Ziff , Ms. Renee Fleming and Ms. Dolora Zajick.
In April 2019 Buttigieg was invited to sing at the Curtis Gala to all the patrons around the globe. This concert was hosted by Bass Eric Owens and Ms Danielle Orlando.

In March 2018, he performed at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia Perelman Theatre with his debut as Masetto in Don Giovanni, Mr. Fogg in Sweeney Todd and Spirit in Dido and Aeneas. In November 2019, he debuted in Barber of Seville as Figaro at
the Opera Philadelphia, Kimmel Centre with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. Here, he had a leading role at 20
years of age. In December 2019, Charles was invited to sing for the patrons of the BOV Joseph Calleja
Foundation at Manoel Theatre with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
Maria-Elena Farrugia - Piano
Maria-Elena Farrugia first started learning the piano at the age of 5 with Antoinette Borg and then continued her studies at the Fransina Abela Brincat Piano School with Maki Yagi, Gergely Nemeth and later, Ingrid Calleja Gruppetta.

In the last 12 years Maria-Elena has been very active in her local musical scene back in Malta, participating in a number of competitions and concerts, including several Lunchtime Concerts at St. James Cavalier as well as performing in the Victoria International Arts Festival. As a result of obtaining high honors in her ABRSM exams and obtaining the Board Prize in Grade 8, in 2003 she was invited to play at the ABRSM Centenary Gala Concert held at Sala Isouard, Manoel Theatre. She also engaged in Masterclasses organized by the Malta International Arts Festival where she was tutored by internationally acclaimed pianists and professors Yuri Didenko, Vassily Scherbakov, Arkady Zenziper, Christoph Traxler and Alexander Zolotarev.

Maria-Elena has also been successful in a number of national and international competitions. In 2003, she won the EPTA (Malta) Competition which enabled her to attend lessons at the Liszt Academy in Budapest with one of the jury, Profs. Balazs Szokolay. The following year, she won 1st prize at the 12th Gianluca Campochiaro Competition (Pedara, Sicily). She also took part in the 6th Young Musicians Contest of the Malta Society of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce where she placed 1st in her category. In 2011 she was 1st prize winner of the Bice Mizzi Vassallo Music Competition (Malta) which gave her the opportunity of a week of Masterclasses held at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, tutored by acclaimed pianist, Norma Fisher. In 2013, she graduated with first class honours in B.A. (Hons.) Music Studies, during which she was taught by Prof. Michael Laus for her solo pianoforte studies.

Following her Bachelor’s degree, she obtained her PGCE in music at the University of Malta. In 2014, her studies in pianoforte continued at the Royal Northern College of Music where she studied with Sally Ann MacLeod, as well as other visiting professors such as Michel Beroff, Philippe Cassard, Harvey Davies, Stefano Fiuzzi, Kathryn Stott and Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna, amongst others. It is here where Maria-Elena expanded her horizons by performing around Manchester, both as a soloist and with several duo and chamber ensembles; one of the most notable groups being Philetas Piano Trio.

In 2016, Maria-Elena graduated from her Master’s degree in Pianoforte studies at the RNCM, and is currently an active pianist, accompanist and teacher around Malta & Gozo, working alongside many established names such as Juliette Bisazza Zanni, Miriam Cauchi, Andriana Yordanova and many others, including being one of Malta Music Schools’ Staff Pianists.
