On the 21st of March, which is the European Day of Early Music, the Monteverdi Project in Malta will join the international celebrations held by REMA, the European early music network to perform a programme of vocal secular music.

The programme includes extracts from Monteverdi’s opera l’Orfeo and madrigals, five voices madrigals by Scarlatti together with a series of vocal pieces by Giovanni Ghizzolo and Il Terzo libro dei Madrigali et Arie (1613). The latter is conserved in its original print in the Mdina Cathedral Archives in Malta.

The Ghizzolo pieces will be performed for the first time in modern times and follow eachother like a kind of Pasticcio, telling in parts a love story that can be easily followed by the audience. Performing these Ghizzolo madrigals is part of the project, started in 2017, of discovering Maltese vocal repertoire which is present in the Mdina Cathedral archives with the music of Benigno Zerafa and compositions of Michel Angelo Falusi, Carlo Tassoni, Isabella Leonarda, Giovanni Battista Vitali and many others.

The guest artist at this Monteverdi Project concert is the internationally renowned theorbo soloist M° Simone Vallerotonda who will perform on the recently acquired theorbo by Teatru Manoel.

The Early Music Day is held every year on 21st March, a day celebrating the beginning of spring, and the birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is a celebration of more than a millennium of music, through concerts, events, and happenings taking place simultaneously across Europe and is a focal point for the promotion of the historical musical heritage in Europe.

REMA (Réseau Européen De Musique Ancienne)
The Early Music Day is a REMA project, launched in 2013, initiated by its past president Peter Pontvik. REMA, the official promoter and coordinator of the celebration, is the representative network for Early Music in Europe, composed by 86 members in 21 countries. The network and its members organise concerts, conferences, and other events under the Early Music Day heading, but the celebration is of course open to every organisation and partner interested in joining!

More information about the programme and performers of the Early Music Day Concert in Malta will follow shortly
