The Malta International Arts Festival presents a double bill programme featuring ŻfinMalta and KorMalta. The evening is introduced by Krzysztof Penderecki’s striking String Quartet No. 1 featuring a wide range of extended techniques for the strings. In spite of the avantgarde aesthetic, the music is engaging, organic and primordial.
Another highlight on the programme is Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4. Revered as one of Bartók’s greatest masterpieces, this work is imbued with elements from Hungarian, Romanian, and Bulgarian music. The first, third, and fifth movements are choreographed by Paolo Mangiola for ŻfinMalta. Both quartets are performed by Belgian string quartet Boho4. The secod half of the programme presents Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass” performed by KorMalta under the baton of choirmaster Riccardo Bianchi.
