Call for Applications for an Artistic Director (Teatru Manoel) Ref: HR/TM/12/2022

Teatru Manoel (the ‘Theatre’) is seeking to engage a creative and innovative cultural professional to take on the role of Artistic Director of the Theatre. The Artistic Director will have the overall responsibility for the artistic management of the Theatre and the development and implementation of its artistic output. The selected candidate will be engaged as Artistic Director for a definite a period of three years (2022-2025), with the possibility of the engagement being renewed, based on outstanding performance.  The provisions of S.L. 452.81 governing employment with an objective reason are applicable in this case.

Role Summary


The Artistic Director will be responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing the artistic vision and strategy of the Theatre as established by its Management Board.  The Artistic Director will oversee the artistic programme for the Theatre as well as manage funding, budgets and staff allocated to the artistic programme and individual productions.  In this regard, the Artistic Director must collaborate very closely with the theatres CEO in managing budgets, staff and funding to support such vision and programme.

The Artistic Director will report to the theatre’s Management Board through the Chief Executive Officer.

The Artistic Director will:
       
a.    compile a draft rolling three-year artistic and development strategy for the Theatre in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) while considering current national cultural policies;

b.    prepare an annual draft artistic programme in collaboration with the CEO and present it to the Theatre’s Management Board for its consideration and approval;

c.    manage and supervise the implementation of the annual artistic programme and report thereon periodically to the Management Board;

d.    develop the annual programme budget in collaboration with the CEO; respect set budgets and work with the established time frames;

e.    draw up an annual evaluation report on the season’s artistic programme with appropriate recommendations for the consideration of the Management Board;

f.    be responsible for and manage the development of new artistic and creative works, including but not limited to the commissioning of new plays, music, dance and other artistic projects in accordance with the approved strategic vision and strategy as approved by the Management Board;

g.    coordinate with producers, directors, performers and artists to attain the best possible productions, collaborating both with the public sector and the private sector.

h.    strive to attract considerable audiences to theatre, in line with strategies designed for audience development;

i.    carry out research, organise workshops, design and engage local and international material and talent following best practices policies and cutting-edge creative initiatives towards the staging of an event of international standards;

j.    act as a spokesperson for the organisation’s artistic purpose via speaking engagements, public and social appearances, and, as may be requested, from time to time;

k.    assist the CEO in the hiring, supervision and evaluation of key technical personnel, including Production Manager and Technical Director according to standing recruitment policies and regulations;

l.    evaluate and choose the artistic content for the Theatre;

m.    focus on the development of local artistic talent;

n.    work closely with the marketing department of the Theatre in terms of communications, public relations and social media;

o.    be in line with the Theatre’s policies;

p.    foster the development of good relations with other cultural organisations by participating in meetings and joint activities where appropriate;

q.    adhere to public procurement policies;

r.    adhere to deadlines set by the Theatre;

s.    attend and supervise scheduled rehearsals and performances of  productions as and when necessary;

t.    be required to publicly speak about Theatre productions;

u.    devote whatever time may be necessary for the success of the Theatre and its productions;

v.    collaborate with other PCO’s and other cultural agencies / entities; and

w.    perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the Management Board, from time to time.


Selection Criteria:

Applicants must be able to provide an overall artistic vision and develop the artistic programme to fulfill the Theatre’s mission and vision whilst striving for quality and excellence. Applicants should have a proven track record of their work, be purposeful and motivated, and must possess excellent communication skills. S/he will be required to make use of his/her existing resources and networks to attract local and international interest in the Theatre.


Eligibility:


By the closing time and date of this call for applications, applicants must be: -

a.    citizens of Malta; or

b.    citizens of other Member States of the European Union who are entitled to equal treatment to Maltese citizens in matters of employment by virtue of EU legislation and treaty provisions dealing with the free movement of workers; or

c.    citizens of any other country who are entitled to equal treatment to Maltese citizens in matters related to employment by virtue of the application to that country of EU legislation and treaty provisions dealing with the free movement of workers; or

d.    any other persons who are entitled to equal treatment to Maltese citizens in matters related to employment in terms of the law or the above-mentioned EU legislation and treaty provisions, on account of their family relationship with persons mentioned in paragraph (a), (b) or (c); or

e.    third country nationals who have been granted long-term resident status in Malta under regulation 4 of the “Status of Long-Term Residents (Third Country Nationals) Regulations, 2006" or who have been granted a residence permit under regulation 18 (3) thereof, together with family members of such third country nationals who have been granted a residence permit under the “Family Reunification Regulations, 2007"; or

f.    in possession of a residence document issued in terms of the “Residence Status of United Kingdom Nationals and their Family Members in Malta in accordance with the Agreement on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community Regulations".

The advice of the Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs within the Identity Malta Agency should be sought as necessary in the interpretation of the above provisions.

The appointment of candidates referred to at (b), (c), (d) and (e) above would necessitate the issue of an employment licence in so far as this is required by the Immigration Act and subsidiary legislation. Jobsplus should be consulted as necessary on this issue.

1.2    able to communicate in the Maltese and English language;

1.3    in possession of a recognised diploma at MQF Level 4 in theatre, drama, arts administration or a related field of study and proven experience of at least 4 years;

OR

1.4    in possession of proven experience of at least 8 years.

*A bachelor's degree within theatre, drama, arts administration, or a related field of study is preferred and will be given due consideration.

** In the absence of documentary evidence as to the ECTS/ECVET credits or other system of measuring the course content, the selection board is to evaluate the submitted programme of study and determine that it is comparable to 180 ECTS/ECVET credits. The advice of the MQRIC may be sought.

1.5 Qualifications at a level higher than that specified above will be accepted for eligibility purposes, provided they meet any specified subject requirements. A Master's qualification at MQF Level 7, or equivalent, must comprise a minimum of 60 ECTS/ECVETS credits or equivalent*.

* In absence of documentary evidence as to the ECTS/ECVET credits or other system of measuring the course content, the selection board is to evaluate the submitted programme of study and determine that it is comparable to 60 ECTS/ECVET credits. The advice of the MQRIC may be sought.

1.6 Applicants must be of good conduct. A Police Conduct certificate less than 2 months old is to be presented.  In the case on non-Maltese applicants the equivalent certificate is to be presented.


Skills and Experience Required


Apart from relevant experience and a proven track record, the candidate must also have:

a.    good budgeting skills;

b.    an understanding of logistical and production requirements and costs;

c.    the ability to network with international artists and artistic management companies;

d.    strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills;

e.    strong management, organisational and motivational skills;

f.    good research skills;

g.    good time management;

h.    demonstrate experience in working on high profile cultural events, productions, and festivals;

i.    have experience with idea generation and delivery of projects from conception to completion;

j.    have experience in managing multiple projects;

k.    have experience in event management;

l.    It is important to note that the candidates are working in a building of significant cultural heritage, and experience and sensitivity to such will be considered an asset

m.    have appropriate understanding of the theatre sector, the industry and the broader cultural sector; and

n.    understand and communicate  in the official language/s of Malta.

o.    any experience in community and work with NGO’s will be considered an asset

Salary Package:

The salary for the post of Artistic Director, will be €37,590. Appointees will be entitled to the payment of an annual performance bonus of up to a maximum of 15% of their basic salary, subject to satisfactory performance and subject to Central Administration's policies in force from time to time. Appointees will also be entitled to allowances.
