Public call for applications to perform duties as Stage Manager
Teatru Manoel is seeking applications from suitable candidates for two (2) dynamic and experienced Stage Managers to join its team. The Stage Managers will act as a liaison amongst the various individuals involved in a theatre production, including the director, actors, costume designer, and technical department, and ensures that all elements of the performance run smoothly.

Built in 1731, Teatru Manoel is one of the oldest working theatres in the world. Besides being a unique example of baroque architecture, it is also Malta’s national theatre and the main contributor to the development of the local cultural scene. The Theatre is committed to entertaining, informing and educating, enriching the cultural life of the audience and presenting quality artistic productions. It aims to build on tradition whilst pushing contemporary boundaries. As the National Theatre, Teatru Manoel also strives to be the people’s theatre and is constantly seeking ways of welcoming in new audiences from all walks of life.

Required Services
The Stage Managers will be responsible to facilitate communication across all creative and technical departments; acting as a right hand to the director; overseeing sets, props, lights, and sound; and calling all technical cues during performances. Although the details of the role vary depending on the artistic performance in question, the Stage Managers are broadly responsible for ensuring that the production runs smoothly from the first rehearsal to the final curtain call.

The Stage Managers will be supporting Teatru Manoel’s Senior Production and Events Manager and Facilities Manager. The Stage Managers will be required to work during the evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Stage Managers’ Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the successful delivery of the performance from design, management, and execution of all elements of a live show.
  • Collaborates with artistic designers, the show director, and the producer to interpret their vision and determine the technical requirements to bring the show to life.
  • Involved from the rehearsal stage through to the live performances, the stage manager must be on hand to deal with any emergencies that may arise.
  • Manages rehearsals, actors, technicians, props and costume fittings, and liaises with front-of-house staff and the director.
  • Take charge of the show once it starts, running the backstage and onstage areas during performances.
  • Make sure that what is supposed to happen during a performance happens and handle any problems that occur.
  • Ensures that a risk assessment is carried out and that all health and safety standards are adhered to.
  • Assesses the equipment needs of the production based on the artistic designs and hires appropriate crew.
  • In conjunction with the prop master, master electrician, and other crew chiefs, the stage manager coordinates the show build from the ground up.
  • Works with the costume department to ensure that all costumes and props are correct and delivered on time.
  • Manage the props and liaises with the production manager regarding costs.
  • Addresses and resolves any technical difficulties during rehearsals and performances.
  • Supervise the ‘get in’ to the theatre, when the set, lighting and sound are installed, and the ‘get out’, when all the equipment is removed.
  • Ensures that the Theatre has the best technical facilities and stage equipment possible and that these are constantly well-maintained.
  • Any other relative tasks as may be asked by the CEO.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • In possession of a pertinent first degree at MQF Level 6 in theatrical production plus two (2) years of relevant work experience;
  • Demonstrates familiarity with the logistics of a theatrical production to ensure that it is delivered exactly to the director’s requirements.
  • Proficient in lighting, audio, carpentry, and artistic design.
  • Have a thorough understanding of all applicable safety regulations and proper operation of shop tools and consoles.
  • Efficient and self-motivated with excellent planning skills, with the ability to deal with multiple tasks at once.
  • Ability to act on own initiative but also to work as part of a team and build strong working relationships with different individuals.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with a positive and creative attitude towards problem solving.
  • A clear commitment to and knowledge of the work of Teatru Manoel.
  • Exceptionally organised and methodical, with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent spoken and written English and Maltese.

Terms for Contract for Service

Contract term:       
A one-year ‘Contract for Service’ with the possibility of being renewed for another year.
Working hours:      
On average 40 hours per week, flexible and according to Teatru Manoel’s needs. Working hours may include evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
