SpotlightSeries – Veronique Vella

The next concert in the Manoel Theatre’s Spotlight series at Sala Isouard will be presented on Thursday 3 November at 8pm.

The programme focuses on composer Véronique Vella, born in Malta in 1979 and who in 2008 became the first Maltese woman to obtain a PhD in Composition. This was conferred on her by Edinburgh Napier University. It was the culmination along a long road of studying, research and tuition. Véronique Vella was twice a recipient of an Ian Tomlin Scholarship and was also generously supported by the Janatha Stubbs Foundation. Her works have been performed in Malta, the U.K., France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Malaysia and the USA. Among the interpreters of her music are the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, The Research Ensemble, the Edinburgh Quartet and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Véronique Vella is often invited as guest speaker at various international conferences, symposiums, workshops and festivals. She is a highly qualified trained pianist and before definitely opting for a musical career she obtained a BA in English and Psychology from the University of Malta.

The concert consists of a number of Malta premieres of some of her compositions. These are Epilogue (2007) for voice, flute, clarinet, horn and piano; Kapricc (2008) for violin, horn and piano and Wens (2009) for solo flute. Among other works of hers in the programme there are Passages of Love (2007), to words by Marco Montalto, for voice and piano, Fjuri (2007) for clarinet, violin and piano and Fantasia for solo piano which she will perform. The programme also includes the Malta premiere of Katrina Burton’s Moon Palace I (for Bob), for solo piano and another solo piano piece, Allegro con spirito which is N.3 from Ligeti’s Musica Ricercata. There will also be the world premiere of Il-Ghanja ta’ omm tistenna tarbija taht sigra for voice and piano, a work by Alex Vella Gregory to words by Immanuel Mifsud.
