Shop assistant Isperanza was enjoying a dance at the Students’ Freshers Party when drug dealer Celik spiked her drink, took her home and savagely raped her. Horrified, future fiance John seeks revenge and tracks the knife-wielding psychopath, who is again stalking Isperanza, this time with murder in mind...

The story of this opera is based on the legend of “Il-Madonna tal-Isperanza”, which tells the story of a young woman trying to escape from the marauding Turks who would often target Malta for looting and kidnapping in the 18th century. The woman hid in a cave covered with ferns, and it is said that when the woman prayed to the Virgin Mary, a spider wove a web around the entrance of the cave, thus making the Turks think she was hidden elsewhere. They searched in vain until they escaped from the Maltese reinforcements looking to drive away the marauders. In gratitude to the Virgin Mary, the woman wished for a church to be built upon the cave in which she was hidden, and this church is now known to us as “Il-Knisja tal-Madonna tal-Isperanza”.
